I VOW TO THEE MY COUNTRY – the hymn was sung at Princess Diana’s funeral; music by Gustav Holst and the words by Sir Cecil Spring-Rice. In August 2004, the Right Reverend Stephen Lowe, Bishop of Hulme, condemned the hymn as totally heretical and called for it to be banned from Anglican ceremonies on the grounds that it set national above religious loyalties. He was largely ignored.

SHALL I COMPARE THEE TO SUMMER’S DAY! – the intoxicating scent of summer still tickles the nostrils. Mossley seems to have been largely deserted this past week, perhaps people taking advantage of the weather to enjoy a few days away. The children have one more week left of the holidays before the school re-opens on Tuesday week; and folk start drifting back to work after the Bank Holiday. Let’s hope that we can all manage to chill out over the weekend.

JUST PRESS PLAY AND PRAY – www.pray-as-you-go.org . It combines music, scripture and some questions for reflection in a new ten minute prayer session every day.

PARISH MAGAZINE – just to mention that holiday reminiscences would be welcome. Also, recommendations on places to eat – where can you get excellent fish and chip? What are the cucumber sandwiches like at the Midland Hotel?!

DIOCESAN PILGRIMAGE TO LADYWELL – Saturday 14th September. It’s a good place to make a private visit if you are in the area – coming off the M6 at junction 32- Ladywell, Fernyhalgh, is signposted. The shrine has a cafe.

The journey from Mossley is just over the hour – well worth a visit.
